The other San Fermin, The Other Pamplona| Euskara eta Kultura |xare , 21.09.2008 21:12 Pamplona organises to Fiestas for San Fermin, the famous and massive one in july and the "San Fermin Txikito" in september based on grass root organisation with the neighbourg commission and social groups. The local right wing government is putting this festival at risk due to reactionnary bigotry.
Pamplona (Navarre) is known world wide for its summer « fiesta » the San Fermines. Between the 7th and the 14th of july, thousands of people from all over the world gather in Pamplona (also known as Iruña in Basque language) with a kind red handkerchief around their neck. The city transforms itself into a non stop fiesta, also very known for their « encierros » and « corridas » the first ones consist of a race with bulls in the streets in the morning and the second one the bull fighting session in the « plaza » in the evening. Ernest Hemingway visited Pamplona and made its fiestas world wide known, since then Australians, Canadians, British, Irish, New Zealanders and South Africans have become a part of Pamplona's urban landscape during the fiestas. Also french and Latin Americans visit the city with citizens from all over the world. The people of Iruñea love their fiesta, they love it so much that the central head quarters of « kukuxumusu » the brand specialized in fancy funny Tshirts bearing local Artists Mikel Urmeneta drawings holds a big digital clock showing in the Estafeta street (next to the plaza) the time left until the next san Fermin all year long This party has a second part of a different nature in the last weekend of september. The San Fermin Txikito recovers the original fiesta of San Fermin which was before the XIII century held in october. In 1976, after Franco's death neighbours, grass roots groups and the peñas (associations that have a very important participation in the summer fiesta) gathered to organized a much more small scale and local fiesta. For the last 35 years, the neighbourgs of the old citadelle of Iruña organise their own San Fermin together with social movements. Some locals even prefer those fiestas since they are not simmilar to the gigantic dimension of the summer version. An opportunity to get to know the local culture, folclore, music together with rock concerts in the streets, all organised by the neighbours in a democratic way with direct participation and open assemblies. Last year, Yolanda Barcina, local maire of reactionnary right wing party UPN (Union del Pueblo Navarro) decided to remove any kind of funding to the organisation of the fiesta. So everything was paid by neighbours an local bars and shops. This year they've gone further, they have given no permission to organise the fiesta, but as the streets got filled with people demonstrating they have pulled back but still forbide to set up a bar in a park near bar so the festivals can be paid for. The reason seems clear, the right wing government is trying to control every thing that happens in the streets, for various reason the center old city of pamplona has been sociologically on the left, and been a source of constant resistance to town hall's neoliberal urbanistic design. Three years ago that same local government distroyed the only modernist building of the city, an old game for basque pelota, that had been abandoned and recovered as a squat organising hundreds of activities, after an aggressive eviction now its a parking space for 20 cars. Now the next target is building all kind of administrative obstacles to prevent the fiestas happen. From friday september 26 to 28 pamplona will live their « San Fermin Txikito » in tension due to maire's local bigottry. xare
