Hidden Toll of US Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq: ?Surge? in Military Suicides - 18 Veterans Commit Suicide Daily ...... An average of 18 US military veterans are taking their lives every day as the Obama administration and the Pentagon grow increasingly defensive about the epidemic of suicides driven by Washington?s wars of aggression. The stunning figure was reported last week by the Army Times, citing officials in the US Veterans Affairs Department. The department estimates that there are 950 suicide attempts every month by veterans who are receiving treatment from the department. Of these, 7 percent succeed in taking their own lives, while 11 percent try to kill themselves again within nine months.

Stanley McChrystal is in Germany at the moment where he might need to help the government there with a bit of messaging on Afghanistan. German troops have been buying up badges saying ?I Fight For Merkel,? an ironic jab at German Chancellor Angela Merkel who they say has failed to explain why German troops are fighting and dying in Afghanistan. The protest badges have reportedly sent shock waves through the Bundeswehr leadership.

If you watch and listen to the entire recording of the July 12, 2007 helicopter attack on a group of Iraqi civilians, including two Reuters employees, you will hear the repeated use of military call signs, but towards the end, you hear an exasperated voice sharing an aside with "Kyle." It?s Grand Theft Auto meets Reno 911 ? except it isn?t. One is entertained by GTA and the antics of incompetent policepeople. One is simply floored by what our soldiers are doing, and how they are doing it. In their defense, they say, "This is war."

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution says the US is the one and only nuclear criminal that falsely claims to be fighting against the spread of nuclear weapons. Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior aide to Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, read the Leader's message to the Tehran conference which opened on Saturday. In the message, the Leader criticized US double standards over the nuclear issue and called Washington the only nuclear criminal.

Gaza: Child killed by disputed fire

Gaza ? Ma'an ? A child was shot and killed east of the Yasser Arafat International Airport in Rafah on Tuesday, medics said. Muawiya Hassanein, director of ambulance and emergency services in Gaza, said Muhammad Zen Ismail Al-Farmawi, 15, was shot dead near the southeasterly border by Israeli forces, while local sources who wished to remain anonymous said the death may have been an internal matter. Hassanein said ambulances had been unable to retrieve the body because of ongoing clashes in the area, while an Israeli military spokesman said he had no knowledge of the incident.

Although an area lined with Israeli military towers and notorious for Israeli soldier shooting, shelling and abductions of Palestinian workers and farmers, Hamdan did not feel he would be in danger. ?People go there everyday to gather bits of metal and concrete. The Israelis see us and know we are just working, it?s normal,? he said from his hospital bed in Jabaliya?s Kamal Adwan hospital.

On January 11, 2010, we sent out a media alert titled, 'Were Afghan children executed by US-led forces? And why aren't the media interested?' The alert concerned credible reports that American-led troops had dragged Afghan children from their beds and shot them during a night raid in Kunar province in eastern Afghanistan on December 27 last year. Ten people were killed, including eight schoolboys from one family. We noted that the alleged atrocity had been almost wholly ignored by the corporate media, including the BBC.

Questions persist after discovery of munitions-laden truck in Ankara ... Stopping a truck in Ümitköy on Wednesday, Ankara police discovered that the truck was filled with munitions. ... A munitions-filled truck discovered in Ankara late on Wednesday turned out to be carrying weapons and hand grenades belonging to the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) to a military facility in the Turkish capital, but questions still linger over why the armed forces ordered the transfer of explosives in a civilian vehicle and without any security escort for protection. Late on Wednesday, Ankara police stopped a truck in Ümitköy upon receipt of an e-mail from an unidentified individual. A search of the vehicle showed that it was filled with weapons and hand grenades. The driver told the police he was taking the munitions to the Special Forces Command in Gölbasi. He also showed documentation indicating that the truck had been hired by the TSK. According to the driver, the explosives were being taken to the military facility in a civilian vehicle for security reasons. A noncommissioned officer and a corporal in civilian attire were also in the truck.
